In a remarkable achievement for Costa Rica’s scientific community, 22-year-old Joseph Castillo Torres has been awarded the prestigious NIC Costa Rica–CERN Scholarship to participate in the 2025 Summer Student Program at CERN (European Organization for Nuclear Research) in Geneva, Switzerland. The scholarship, funded by NIC Costa Rica—a specialized unit of the National Academy of Sciences overseeing the .cr domain—covers airfare, accommodation, living expenses, and insurance, totaling over $7,000.
A Passion for Science and Innovation
Castillo, a dual Physics and Electrical Engineering student at the University of Costa Rica (UCR), stood out among numerous applicants due to his academic excellence and dedication to scientific exploration. His selection underscores Costa Rica’s growing role in fostering talent for global scientific endeavors.
“My interest in this program began last year after hearing about it from peers who previously participated. What drives me is the opportunity to contribute to groundbreaking research in fundamental physics,” Castillo told CRHoy.
Joining the World’s Leading Physics Hub
From June 23 to August 15, 2025, Castillo will collaborate with international researchers on cutting-edge projects at CERN, renowned for its particle accelerators and pioneering work in understanding the universe. While his specific assignment is pending, he aims to engage in particle physics research, citing his fascination with “questions about matter and the universe that CERN seeks to answer.”
He also highlighted the interdisciplinary nature of his studies: “Particle physics requires experimental design and engineering innovation—areas where my background can add value.”
A Track Record of Excellence
Castillo’s credentials include representing Costa Rica at PLANCKS 2024, an international physics competition in Dublin, and plans to compete again in 2025.
