Sport Fishing

Sport fishing is hugely popular in Costa Rica, and even the biggest reason why some people visit. Fish are abundant all over the country – on both the Pacific and Caribbean coast, as well as in some rivers and lakes.

Lake Arenal is actually great for fishing. Many visitors love to include a day (of half day) of fishing while they are in the area. It’s a fantastic place to catch a guapote or two, and the view is difficult to beat!

For a more thrilling sport fishing adventure, you can head to the Pacific coast. There are fantastic inshore and offshore fishing tours offered almost all along the shore. However, the best spots are the Central Pacific, close to the Jacó area and the Guanacaste area on the Northwest Pacific coast. The Osa Peninsula, at the very South of the country, also offers amazing opportunities! You’ll have a chance to catch species such as marlin, roosterfish, dorado, snapper and many more in these areas.

There aren’t quite as many options for sport fishing on the Caribbean side of Costa Rica. With that said, tarpon and snook fishing is hugely sought-after in the Northern Caribbean, close to Tortuguero. The wetlands formed where the rivers meet the ocean are amazing for this!
