When planning a vacation to Costa Rica, one of the most daunting aspects is often how to get around. For a country roughly the size of West Virginia, it takes a surprisingly long time to get from one destination to the next due to the mountainous terrain. Routes can be quite confusing, too. To top it off, public transportation is slow, sometimes unreliable, and difficult to get accurate information about. Not great if you want to make the most out of your trip!
We’ve found that the easiest way to travel through the country, is to book private or shared transfers through a local company. This is especially true if you are first-time visitors- This way, someone who knows the roads well will take care of the driving, while you can sit back and enjoy the view. They will pick you up at most hotels in popular areas, and you will often have a choice between a private or a shared service.
Private transportation
Private transfers are of course, more comfortable, as only you and your travel partners will be in your new, air-conditioned van. This also means that you can choose the time of your departure, as well as make any stops you’d like along the way. It’s perfect for trips to and from the airport, too, as you can arrange the transfer based on the times of your flights and not be dependent on a bus schedule.
Shared transportation
Shared shuttle transfers are a great way to travel if you are on a tighter budget, but still want to get around easily and safely. For shared services, you will be traveling with up to about 10-12 other passengers, in an air-conditioned van. They will also pick up at most hotels, and usually run once of twice a day, on a fixed schedule.
Adventure Connections
As you know, going from one area to the other is usually a whole day affair in Costa Rica. If you’re looking to make the most out of every moment of your trip, adventure connections are a fantastic way to travel. If you have the energy for it, of course! These are a combination of a transfer and a tour. You’ll usually start your journey in a van. Then, it’s time for an adventure! There are several fun options, including rafting, a boat ride across Lake Arenal, mountain biking or a beautiful hike.
